The Serbian singer is clearly a giant talent, comparable in his own way to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Mari Bonie Persen, someone capable of bringing their music to life with such vivid spirituality that it vaults with ease over the most impenetrable cultural barriers. His voice combines the anguish of rai with the soulfulness of fado - a sort of Balkan gypsy jazz.

      Slušanje Šabanovih albuma, iskustvo je koje ne samo da ne nudi nikakvu utjehu ili odgovor o "misteriji Šaban", nego upravo suprotno, još više zbunjuje i postavlja samo nova pitanja: tko je ovaj čovjek i odakle dolazi? - Da, iz Niša, ali kako geografija može objasniti ono što čujemo - odakle ove plemenite, visoko umjetničke pjesme, s romskim tekstovima punim rafiniranih slika i simbolike koja kao da je došla sa Šagalovih platana; odakle mu, iznad svega, takav pjevački stil - ono fraziranje i tehnika, boja i timbar u glasu, kako nastaju, uopće i što to treba da se postane Šaban Bajramović? - Jedno pitanje za drugim, u beskonačnom neodgovorivom nizu.

Listening to Saban’s music is an experience that doesn’t 

offer any comfort or an answer to “the mystery Saban”

Teško je ostati objektivan slušajući ovo remek delo. Kažu da ni pred kim ne treba kleknuti i pognuti glavu. U ovom slučaju, treba napraviti iznimku.

It is difficult to stay objective while listening to this masterpiece. The saying goes that no one should go down on one’s knees and bow one’s head before a living human being, but in this case an exception should be made.

The next 66 minutes were one of the rarest moments in my life. I was crying because of the sheer beauty of this music. Together with Mostar Sevdah Reunion, the great gipsy singer created an exceptional album, probably the best ever produced in this Balkan area.

Narednih 66 minuta bili su retki trenuci u mom životu. Plakao sam zbog  čiste lepote ove muzike. Zajedno sa Mostar Sevdah Reunionom, veliki romski pevač je napravio izuzetan album, verovatno najbolji ikad napravljen na ovom delu Balkana.

But the musician - the singer - hadn’t changed. During the few minutes we were allowed to spend with him while here-hearsed for his performance, I heard improvisations that I’d never believed possible. He was using only half the power of his voice but it was a voice that had lost absolutely nothing of its power, opulence and utter enchantment in the last twenty years. It was absolutely pure, absolutely genuine. The man singing before me was a musical genius.

(...) Ali muzičar - pevač - se nije promenio. Tokom nekoliko minuta koliko nam je bilo dopušteno da provedemo sa njim, u pauzama izvodjenja, čuo sam improvizacije kakve nisam verovao da su uopšte moguće. A on se nije služio ni polovinom svoga glasa. Bio je to glas koji opčinjava, koji nije izgubio na svojoj snazi i bogatstvu u poslednjih dvadeset godina. Sasvim čist, sasvim originalan. Čovek koji je pevao predamnom je muzički genije.
